Unauthorized parallel imports of Hyundai-branded excavators into Uzbekistan have been stopped. According to the Intellectual Property Center of the Ministry of Justice of Uzbekistan, a local company unlawfully used the Hyundai brand without the consent of the rights holder.
The company V.I. attempted to import two excavators bearing the Hyundai trademark, manufactured by Hyundai Construction Equipment, without any authorization or distribution agreement. Following a complaint filed by the official distributor in Uzbekistan, GST Oil, the shipment was detained at a customs checkpoint.
With the assistance of the justice authorities, the parties reached a mediated out-of-court settlement. Under the terms of the agreement, V.I. agreed to pay compensation to the official dealer in the amount of 500 base calculation units, equivalent to approximately 206 million Uzbek sums.
The settlement also requires V.I. to cease any use of the Hyundai brand and to refrain from importing Hyundai machinery into Uzbekistan. In addition, the company removed references such as “official dealer” and “HD Hyundai Centre” from its YouTube channel, Instagram account, and other social media platforms.
