On June 1, 2021, a solemn ceremony was held at the Eurasian Patent Office, symbolizing the launch of the Eurasian system of legal protection for industrial designs.

As part of the ceremony, the first Eurasian design application was filed. It was an application filed on behalf of the state corporation “Roscosmos” in relation to the product “Energy-absorbing cosmonaut chair”.

According to the head of Rospatent, the Eurasian system of the legal protection of industrial designs will help increase the activity of applicants and promote the institution of industrial designs in the region, reduce the administrative and financial costs of entrepreneurs wishing to work in Russia and other countries of the Eurasian region.

Eurasian patents for industrial designs will be valid on the territory of those states in respect of which the Protocol has already entered into force on the date of filing the corresponding Eurasian applications for industrial designs.

As of June 1, 2021, such states are Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia. Belarus, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan have not yet completed the procedures for ratifying the Protocol.
